Unreleased BlackBerry Z30 is caught on tape... and doesn't look half bad

Remember when BlackBerry (or as it was known back in the day, RIM) was considered the unsinkable, unbreakable flagship of the sea world consisting of smarter or dumber phones? The memory is all that’s left of those times, with BB now looking like a shabby rubber raft, threatened by the quietest of winds.

Predictable metaphors aside, it’s probably not a secret anymore that the former leader of the mobile universe is on the verge of bankruptcy and not even its captain believes in the avoiding of its sinking anymore. Darn, here I go with the metaphors again.

Anyhow, the show must go on, as minuscule as BB’s chances of survival might appear, and the Z30 (aka Aristo) is the device that’ll next have to take on the Herculean labor of boosting sales numbers.

Leaked a number of times already, the soon to be unveiled smartphone is starting today as transparent as glass for us all, showing off its every curve and even some software and hardware knickknacks in a hands-on YouTube video.

As you might imagine, the clip is far from official and so it has to be taken with a small pinch of salt. “Small” being the keyword there, as 4Leaks, the YouTube user responsible for the uploading of the video, has not long ago been the first to catch the elusive LG G2 in all its glory on camera.

So assuming this is not the most elaborate hoax in internet history, the BlackBerry Z30 is to sport a surprisingly crisp albeit a tad hard to use in difficult light conditions 5-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels.

Beneath the hood, there are 2 GB of RAM, most likely a dual-core 1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU (unconfirmed yet), plus a rather generous 2,800 mAh battery. Other rumored features include 16 GB of on-board storage, microSD support, 8 MP/2 MP dual cameras and of course the running of BlackBerry’s 10.2 OS.

In terms of design and build quality, there’s not much one can criticize here, even if BB has avoided using the much praised aluminum for the phone’s manufacturing. Instead, the back seems to be made of carbon fiber and is thus smooth and elegant, whereas the front rocks a sleek industrial look and ample but not huge bezels.

Bottom line, this is a definite step in the right direction for BlackBerry, but likely not a sufficiently big one. In other words, it’s a step forward when the Canadians needed a leap. Oh, well, maybe next time… if there’ll ever be one.
