Job opening on Apple's Maps team talks about a 'new secret project'

Its not unusual to hear that Apple is working on a secret project. The latest indication of such a project hints at the fact that it might be tied to Apple’s Maps service in some way.

Apple has posted a new job listing on its careers site. It is looking for a frontend web designer, particularly a Maps Web User Interface Designer. The person will be tasked with designing, developing and maintaining complex front-end code for a “new secret project.”*This is a full time position based at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Despite Maps being mentioned in passing, it appears that the person in this position would have broader web development responsibilities. As per the company’s description of this position, the developer will become part of a small team which is working on an advanced web platform. This particular platform is said to be the backbone of many services that Apple plans on offering in the future.*Candidates must have a minimum of three years experience in building web services and apps, they should have understanding of a number of programming languages as well as various Javascript testing frameworks.

It is speculated that Apple might be looking to extend its Maps offering beyond its own devices. It may perhaps make the service accessible through a regular browser by creating a web portal, or it may also allow developers to incorporate mapping data provided by it in their apps or websites. This is pure speculation at this point in time. We’ll have to wait and see what this “secret project” turns out to be.
