Galaxy Gear has a staggeringly high return rate

A leaked document from Best Buy shows the smartwatch has a 30 percent return rate, but Samsung is hopeful that increased compatibility may bring more sales.

Best seller it is not.

A document from Best Buy recently leaked to Geek.com shows that Samsung’s poorly received smartwatch has had an in-store return rate of 30 percent. The document says Samsung employees in Best Buy Samsung mini-stores are to survey customers to to see why they are returning the smartwatch.

While the document doesn’t talk about any specific issues that might prompt returns a very likely reason is compatibility issues, as at launch the Gear was limited to only being able to sync with the Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014.

Now in a bid to improve the popularity of the struggling device, Samsung is expanding the compatibility of the Gear via software updates. As previously reported on VR-Zone, the Gear will be compatible with the Galaxy S4, S III, and Note II as well as the Galaxy S4 mini, S4 Active, Mega 5.8, Mega 6.3, and S4 Zoom via the Android 4.3 update.

The document shows the update will roll out over-the-air during November and the exact date depends on the specific carrier.

VR-Zone previously reviewed the Galaxy Gear smartwatch and gave it a “fail” rating.
