Rockstar Games wanted Alec Baldwin to voice a 'GTA' role, but he turned it down

30 Rock‘s Alec Baldwin was once given the opportunity to lend his voice to an early Grand Theft Auto game, but the star turned it down because he didn’t want to play a cop-killing mobster.

Alec Baldwin has had a storied career, and remains one of the most recognizable actors of our era. He’s starred in a plethora of films, and has lent his iconic voice and hilarious persona across television and film for decades, becoming an influence in the industry with his charm and wit.

As interesting as his varied career in stage and screen may be, the paths he chose not to take are also interesting in their own merit, and in a recent interview Alec Baldwin divulges some of the opportunities he passed over.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Baldwin revealed that he was asked to lend his voice to a particular mobster in Grand Theft Auto 2, but despite being offered an “incomprehensible amount of money for one day’s work”, he chose to opt out of it. Why? He didn’t want to play a cop-killer:
“[The makers of] ‘Grand Theft Auto’ came to me to do a voice of some mobster, many years ago, for ‘Grand Theft Auto 2.’ … and they offered this incomprehensible amount of money for one day’s work.

And they offered me a pile of money, this ridiculous amount of money to just come in a record this voice for one or two days,” Baldwin said.

“And I turned them down because [the character] was a cop killer. And I didn’t want to get near that [because] of my reputation; I have enough problems with the press as it is. I said no.”

Despite the media black-lash he might have faced at the time, if Baldwin had opted in it would be interesting to think he might be part of the franchise–maybe even having a pivotal role in Grand Theft Auto V.

Other stars like Ray Liotta, Michael Madsen and Samuel L. Jackson have lent their particular unforgettable voices to the GTA series over the years, and one would have to wonder how Alec Baldwin’s buttery tones would fit within the franchise.
