Xolo launches $210 quad-core Q900 smartphone, also intros dual-core A600

Anyone from India looking to make a solid deal on an Android handheld with cool looks, decent speed and spacious display? You’re in luck, because Xolo is on a roll and, following the Q600, Play, Q1000S and A500S, they’ve just introduced the Q900.

Before you even ask, no, this is not a powerhouse. Nor is it a Galaxy S4, Note 3 or iPhone 5s “killer”. But it has a killer price tag attached to its name and I know that’s vital for many of you. Plus, for $210 (Rs. 12,900), it doesn’t look half bad.

For one thing, it’s fairly sleek from an aesthetical standpoint, measuring 9.9 mm in thickness. Then you get a 4.7-inch display with 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution and 312 ppi. And a 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek 6589 CPU that’s light years behind, say, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 or 800, but it still can decently hold its own in light gaming, browsing, multimedia playing and whatnot.

More so as it’s paired with a solid PowerVR SGX 544 GPU and 1 GB RAM. Too bad there are only 4 GB of on-board storage here and a measly 1,800 mAh battery, Xolo choices that I really can’t defend. But hey, there’s microSD support for expanding the memory and pre-loaded Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, as well as dual SIM and an 8 MP rear snapper to make you forget about the lousy autonomy.

Meanwhile, if 200 bucks is a little north of what you can afford to cough up for a new mobile phone, you may be interested in the Xolo A600. Inconspicuously listed on the OEM’s website, the 4.5-incher is not yet up for grabs, nor is it officially priced.

But it can’t go for more than $150, as it comes with a qHD screen in tow, dual-core 1.3 GHz MediaTek processor, 512 MB RAM and 5 MP camera. On the bright side, Android 4.2 runs this software show too and, in an unexpectedly pleasant twist, there’s actually a larger capacity (1,900 mAh) battery inside the A600. If only Xolo wouldn’t be so afraid of tackling markets outside India.
