Nvidia Shield price drops to $250 for limited time, games and accessories included

Nvidia couldn’t have sit the Black Friday deal frenzy out, especially since the Shield handheld console isn’t exactly selling like hotcakes, and so the gaming gear has been discounted for purchases via an array of retailers.

The most lucrative promo is definitely the one on Nvidia’s own online store, where the Shield costs $249. That’s $50 off the list price, plus you get some extra incentives free of charge. There’s a silver armor, otherwise known as a carrying case (normally $39.99), as well as full copies of Expendable: Rearmed and Sonic 4 Episode II THD, valued at $7 give or take.

Bottom line, a bundle worth roughly 350 bucks can be scored for $100 less. Pretty solid deal in my book. Besides, even if you’re still on the fence about getting the Shield, there’s plenty of time for a wise, well-thought decision. The special offer ends December 2 at 11:59 pm, so just as Cyber Monday wraps up.

Meanwhile, if you’d rather nab the mobile game console from a third-party seller, be sure to swing by Newegg, Best Buy, Amazon or GameStop. Their conditions and included freebies differ a little, but the dough to be shelled out is the same: $250.

Of the pack, Newegg quite clearly stands out, bundling the Shield with the same $40 case as Nvidia, but adding a 2-month subscription to Hulu Plus in the mix, usually going for $15.98. They also vow to ship the gadget in two days with no extra charge, so let’s give credit where credit is due and admit this may well be an even better offer than Nvidia’s. If you’re into Hulu, that is.

Remember, the Shield is a very unusually-looking device, sporting a flip-up 5-inch touchscreen with 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution. It runs Android 4.2 out the box (upgradeable to 4.3), packs plenty of heat (all things considered), courtesy of a quad-core Tegra 4 SoC, and can stream games from a desktop PC equipped with an Nvidia GTX 650 or higher video card. At the end of the day, it’s not spectacular, but at $250, it’s worth a shot.
