Michael Thomasson, a dedicated collector based in New York, has been awarded the Guinness World Record for the largest video game collection in 2014.

43-year-old Michael Thomasson has been collecting video games for decades now, and his game-filled basement is a testament to his dedication.
Thomasson’s collection is a treasure trove of rare games and consoles; from the obscure to those downright one-in-a-million games that fetch high prices on eBay, the library houses over 10,000 games all-in-all–many of which can be considered the crown jewels of the gaming sphere.
“I have games on cartridge, laser disc. I have VHS-based games, cassette-based games,” the collector reveals, touching upon some of the different mediums on which video games have been released over the years.
The rare and obscure Casio Loopy console was released in Japan in 1995, geared towards “gamerchicks”.
But Thomasson doesn’t just have games; he has consoles the span the entire history of gaming itself, from the Odyssey to the Xbox 360. He even has the*Casio Loopy, that mid-90′s Japanese import specifically targeting girl gamers, and*Pippin, Apple’s notoriously failed venture into the gaming world.
The New York-based collector’s passions have not only earned him a substantial offering of digital entertainment, but he’s also been bestowed the official Guinness World Record for the largest video game collection. Guinness tallied up his collection at over 10,000 games–the official number is 10,600. Thomasson’s sizable library overshadows*Richard Lecce’s*(the former record holder from 2010) by over 2,000 games.
Thomasson’s award-winning video game collection has an estimated value of $700,000 to $800,000. The collector has since announced his library has grown even bigger to an impressive 11,000 games…but has he played all of them?
Apple’s failed foray into the console world was ushered in by the Pippin, which was notoriously bad for its time.
“I probably get three hours of playing in a week,” he said. “If I’m lucky.” An active parent who teaches game design at Buffalo University, Thomasson concedes he hasn’t played every game–and with that many titles, it’s no surprise.
Thomasson’s record may very well be broken as time goes by, but for now his incredibly sizable hall of gaming fame serves as not only an inspiration but as an example of how determination and passion can mingle to create something grand.
Who knows, maybe his collection will find its way in an official museum of video games?
