A teardown of the new Apple Mac Pro reveals a removable Intel CPU.
Earlier this year when Apple first started teasing the new Mac Pro, it was believed that radical changes would be made to the computer. That is true, it has an all new design and its more powerful than ever before. Apple was able to start shipping it before the end of December, technically meeting its deadline of shipping the new Mac Pro units before the end of this month. Customers have already started receiving their units and the folks at Other World Computing decided perform a teardown of a new Mac Pro.
The teardown reveals that the Intel Xeon E5 processor on Mac Pro is removable, meaning that there is a possibility of future upgrades. All four available CPUs employ the same LGA 2011 socket which is standardized on the computer’s motherboard. Since the Mac Pro doesn’t use soldered processors that are common in other Macs, customers will be able to upgrade their machines if they feed the need to do so. Things aren’t so easy when a processor is soldered on to the motherboard.
Enthusiasts are definitely going to be please, because not only does the new Mac Pro use socketed CPUs, it also uses traditional RAM slots, which means that even the RAMs are user-upgradable.
