iOS in the Car simulation video making the rounds

A developer has been able to run iOS in the Car through a simulator, a video has been posted for your viewing pleasure.

Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook called the iOS in the Car feature an important part of the company’s ecosystem, branding it as a “key focus” for Apple. The feature was talked up at WWDC 2013, but since then Apple hasn’t said much about it. It is yet to be activated and its highly likely that the user interface of iOS in the Car has significantly changed, Apple has only published marketing images on its website for now. Earlier this month purported screenshots of iOS in the Car leaked online showing off a revamped user interface, today a video has started making the rounds.

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith, who was behind the leaked screenshots, has posted this video online, showing iOS in the Car running on a simulator. He shows off voice activated requests for “San Francisco,” “1 Infinite Loop” and “Ice Cream.” The feature responds accordingly. Troughton-Smith asks it for directions to Moscone Center in San Francisco, they immediately come up on the iPhone as well as the simulator’s virtual display. Audi, Honda, BMW and other manufacturers have expressed their interest in supporting iOS in the Car in many of their 2014 models, the in-dash display will mirror what we can see in the simulator’s virtual display, provided that Apple doesn’t make any major changes to the user interface prior to launch.

Troughton-Smith says that the iOS 7.0.3 release has this feature baked in, but it takes a lot of work to find it and activate it. The feature was also found to exist in iOS 7.1 beta 4. Apple is expected to formally launch iOS in the Car with iOS 7.1, which might be released to the public in the near future.
