Tim Cook admits iPhone 5C demand didn't meet Apple's expectations

Apple doesn’t reveal unit sales of individual iPhone models, but CEO Tim Cook admitted that the iPhone 5C demand was lower than they had expected.

Apple has reported its fiscal 2014 first quarter results, during the quarter it sold 51 million iPhones, slightly below analyst predictions of 55 million units even though the unit sales established a new record for the company.*As rumored, iPhone 5S brought in bulk of the sales, with CEO Tim Cook admitting in the earnings conference call that demand percentage for iPhone 5C “turned out to be different than we thought.”

Soon after the iPhone 5C was released last year, rumors started circulating that Apple was cutting down production due to disappointing sales. At that time, it was predicted that customers were more interested in the flagship iPhone 5S, Cook too believes that the company’s flagship drove away sales from the “unapologetically plastic” model.*The company believes Touch ID fingerprint scanner in iPhone 5S intrigued customers, that and other unique things to the flagship “got the iPhone 5S to have a significant amount more attention and a higher mix of sales,” Cook said.

The CEO didn’t reveal what Apple has planned for the plastic iPhone’s future, it was recently reported that the company might discontinue the plastic body and release two new iPhones this year with the same build materials as the iPhone 5S.
