Today in Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors: 16 MP+ cam, Quad HD display, model numbers

In the latest installment of the seemingly never-ending Samsung Galaxy S5 rumor saga, we take a look at a vast list of purported model numbers, as well as fresh evidence concerning camera performance and display resolution.

When will it all stop? It’s probably the question on most people’s minds when it comes to the S5 gossip bonanza. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the occasional rumormongering as much as the next mobile tech fanatic, but here, it’s gotten a little out of control.

Not only is the handheld’s ETA still a question mark, but things are murky in the software and hardware departments too, as controversy surrounds fingerprint support, eye scanning, the camera, UI, screen, battery, CPU(s) and RAM. And don’t get me started on the exhausting plastic-or-metal game.

Well, maybe today’s stories can help clear the air. First off, a photo of… nothing, allegedly taken with the GS5, has been tweeted by @evleaks, confirming the rear-facing snapper will sport a sensor of at least 16 MP. You don’t say?

And no, it does not set the camera sensor in stone at exactly 16 MP. The resolution is 5,312 x 2,988 pixels, but at a 16:9 aspect ratio, so converted to 4:3, it could suggest 21 megapixels. Or not.

Oh, for crying out loud, let’s move on and hear it from Samsung officials at the Semiconductor and Display Technology Roadmap Seminar 2014. Apparently, they substantiated their Quad HD (aka QHD, aka 2K) panel work, though at no point was it hinted the S5 will score the advanced technology. So Full HD is still a possibility.

On a somewhat unrelated note, the company’s execs in Korea also confirmed they’re planning phones with 4K, or UHD, resolution for the distant future, which is outright bonkers. For the record, UHD is 3,840 x 2,160, so a pixel density of roughly 800 ppi on a 5.5 incher. 880 with 5 inches of screen real estate.

Finally, courtesy of the folks over at Sam Mobile, the list of Samsung Galaxy S5 regional model numbers is complete. Not that it helps in any way establish the phone’s potential for greatness:
