The man in charge with BlackBerry’s unlikely but not impossible financial recovery, John Chen, hasn’t shied away from showcasing the Passport and Classic months ahead of their launches, but not even him can be happy with the latter now starring in a thorough, 7 minutes-long unofficial preview.
If there’s one word that spot-on describes current BlackBerry management, it’s surely bold. No pun intended, although their strategy for bringing back the lost BB magic involves, aside from going where no handheld manufacturer has dared before in terms of form factors, reviving the classic, retro, physical QWERTY keyboard-toting Bold line.
Only the upcoming Bold heir carries a different moniker. Different but equally suggestive. Meet the Classic, which I’m pretty sure no one’s ever going to describe as a head-turner. But looks aren’t everything, and if you’re one of those productivity nuts, you have to check out the following video.
Just be warned, you may be left drooling over your keyboard and throwing money at the screen with little effect. Remember, the Classic can’t be bought just yet, though the December ETA is at least drawing near.

What do you think? Impressed? Not so much? It obviously depends on your stance regarding physical keyboards on modern phones, especially in a combination with a fairly small touchscreen. A 3.5 incher with respectable 720 x 720 pixels resolution, that is.
But the LCD is hardly the star of the hybrid ensemble, with the comfortably sized, tool belt-boasting console instead stealing the limelight. What’s impressive is the Classic is pretty “pocketable” and compact, as it measures 130 mm in height and 72 mm in width. Not to mention slim, at a measly 9 mm.
We almost can’t believe BB is planning to aim this one at budget-conscious audiences. Mostly business-focused users too, but who can’t exactly afford or want to cough up $600 outright.
The above hands-on clip, which among others compares the Classic to the all-touch BlackBerry Z30 and walks us through some of the new software features of BB OS 10.3.1, offers little insight into the looming phone’s specs. But we already know we’re looking at a moderately beefy dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 SoC/2 GB RAM/2,515 mAh battery configuration, with dual cameras that remain cloaked in secrecy.
Enough teasing, BlackBerry, it’s time to completely let the cat out of the bag, pricing structure and all.
