Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno: Japanese anime is in decline and will 'die' soon

Much like Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki and Gundam creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino, Evangelion creator, Hideaki Anno is known in the anime industry to be pretty outspoken about his views, and during a recent interview with the*Russian news agency RIA Novosti, he predicted that in 5 – 20 years,*the Japanese anime industry might disappear.
According the the anime legend,*“Japanese animation is in decline” and will be suffering an “inevitable death” as the industry has already reached its peak. However, Anno did say that Japanese animation itself will still continue, but not as popular as it is today. He said* “I don’t think animation will vanish,*but perhaps, there might not be the conditions that have existed up until now that have led to the creation of interesting films.”
Japan is currently the biggest anime producer in Asia, but Anno thinks that in five years or so, other Asian countries, most particularly, Taiwan, might become the biggest animation producer.*“Japan will just no longer be the center of world animation,*Maybe in five years, Taiwan will be such a center.” He even praised Taiwanese animators by saying that animators there had “had such passion and energy” as compared to the Japanese animation industry which is “moving by inertia.”
Currently, the Japanese animation industry is suffering from many problems such as very low wages for animators despite the industry being very lucrative. Anno has said in the interview that the Japanese anime industry must be “flexible*towards adapting new methods, such as computer graphics, to find new ways to make interesting anime in a new environment.”
His mentor and close friend, Hayao Miyazaki, has also been a staunch critic of today’s anime industry and criticized it for having “too many otakus”.
